The National Electoral Commission (NEC) of Somaliland has wrapped up a five-day comprehensive review at Safari Hotel in Borama, evaluating the landmark dual elections of November 13, 2024, which saw both Presidential and Political Parties contests decided in a single day.
The historic elections, widely praised for their peaceful conduct, resulted in an opposition victory that saw incumbent President Muse Bihi Abdi gracefully conceding to the winner, demonstrating Somaliland's growing democratic maturity. The successful implementation of simultaneous elections marked a significant milestone in the region's democratic journey.
During the review sessions, NEC Chairman Muse Hassan Yusuf emphasized the importance of this evaluation, noting that recommendations from the meeting would significantly contribute to strengthening Somaliland's democratic processes. The assessment covered the entire electoral cycle, from voter registration to results announcement, examining both technical and operational aspects.
The gathering, which included NEC Commissioners, departmental staff, regional and district electoral officials, and members of the Political Parties Task Force, benefited from the participation of the Netherlands Multiparty Institute for Democracy (NMID). Discussions centered on the successful implementation of electoral procedures, addressing challenges encountered, and documenting lessons learned for future Local Council and Parliamentary elections.
Chairman Yusuf highlighted how this comprehensive review demonstrates Somaliland's commitment to continuous democratic improvement, building public confidence, and setting a positive example for democracy in the Horn of Africa region. The successful conduct of the dual elections and the peaceful transfer of power have particularly strengthened Somaliland's position as a beacon of democratic practice in the region.
The evaluation process will inform preparations for upcoming local council and parliamentary elections, with recommendations focusing on modernizing electoral processes and enhancing efficiency in future democratic exercises.
