The Role of NEC

The mandate of the Somaliland National Electoral Commission (NEC) encompasses the organization, conduct, and supervision of all elections in Somaliland, including presidential, parliamentary, and local council elections, as well as referendums.

The NEC is entrusted with determining the timing and locations of elections, managing electoral campaigns, and announcing interim results prior to final approval by the Supreme Court. It oversees the comprehensive voter registration process, which entails preparing and updating voter lists, issuing voter cards, and ensuring compliance with legal standards.

The NEC also implements public awareness campaigns to educate citizens regarding their voting rights and the significance of electoral participation. Furthermore, it coordinates with international and local organizations, stakeholders, and issues regulations, guidelines, and codes of conduct to ensure transparent, fair, and efficient electoral processes.
